Hobbit Garden: Spring 2025
*emerges from the writing nest to toss a blog post at you*
Hello!
I am back with a new garden update as progress has started. We haven’t had the chance to do much gardening yet as the windstorm in January left us with a lot of stuff to clean up that has been filling our green bin. Kyle has also been busy with his new job so we have been finding the balance of work/play on the weekends we don’t have plans.
The backyard is the least changed, with the return of snapdragons, nasturtiums, and a few wildflowers. In the winter, we discovered we actually have two camellia bushes, one pink and one white, so we get these pretty mixed colored flowers. We also just made these pretty decor fairy wands at an Easter party. Bush trimming and weeding is pretty much all it and the front yard need, though in the front we will be getting a bunch of mulch to lay down to keep the grass from growing back. Our mystic spires and lavender are in full bloom, attracting all the bees and bumblebees, including my favorite golden boy. Also our mint patches have gotten enormous.
My goal was to get the side yard cleared this month and while it won’t be finished, I did cut down the basil and add six new bags of soil into the bed. We only have thyme and green onions at the moment. We are waiting for a ton of basil seeds which will hopefully sprout soon as well as carrots.
The side yard needs heavy clearing and weeding, including taking out the black plastic and laying down mulch. The blackberry beds, though they have some nasturtiums sprouts coming through, also needs to be weeded of grass and mulched. We have also decided to remove the Triple Crown bushes and replace them with more of the Freedom Arc as they are bushier and are more fruitful and have better berries. We have a tone of blooms and berries already so are looking forward to pies, sherbet, and just snacking on them. The Triple Crown are just too vine-like and hard to maintain. They’ve even started growing into the path.
Other updates that we would like to get to include; putting in lights and stepping stones, finishing the second and third raised bed as well as the squash bed, and buy a standing composter.
Things we would like to grow:
golden potatoes
garlic
red onions
carrots
beets
broccoli
asparagus
pumpkins
peas
tomatoes
Another goal is planting seasonal sweet peas and adding a couple rose bushes around the property.
There’s a lot of work to be done, but we are excited for finally getting our little hobbit garden setup and easy to regularly maintain. I hope you enjoyed the update and fingers crossed there will be another one by end of year!
